Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall was born in 1887 to a poor Jewish family in Russia. He was the eldest of nine children. Chagall began to display his artistic talent while studying at school, and despite his father’s disapproval, in 1907 he began studying art with Leon Bakst in St. Petersburg. In 1985, Chagall died of a heart attack at the age of 97.

Why I chose this artist.
I chose Marc Chagall because I like the way he used his imagination for his paintings. During the Second World War, he was not afraid of painting Jewish martyrs and refugees despite the fact that it is very dangerous because of the Nazis.

How his artwork helped to define the meaning of ‘art’ in his society.
He was also a part of an art movement called “impressionism” which means an artistic style that seeks to capture a feeling or experience rather than to achieve accurate drawing. This movement also includes other famous artists like Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro.
